    POSITION TITLE Retirement Intern(s) AGENCY The Essex Regional Retirement System (ERRS) administers the public pension system for 47 local government entities, including 19 towns, five school districts, 17 housing authorities and six special districts throughout Essex County, Massachusetts. ERRS provides retirement services for over 6,500 members, retirees and beneficiaries and oversees $695 million in assets. The retirement system has six full-time employees and is located in Danvers, Massachusetts.

    POSITION DESCRIPTION ERRS is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and detail-oriented Retirement Intern to assist the retirement system staff in providing services to its members and retirees. The Retirement Intern will gain experience providing service directly to members and retirees seeking information regarding their account and/or retirement benefits. The intern will also gain experience in understanding state and local government procedures and policies. The Retirement Intern will report directly to the Executive Director but will also work closely with the ERRS retirement counselors. Specific duties for the Retirement Intern include, but are not limited to, providing research and support in responding timely to member and retiree inquiries. The Retirement Intern will also conduct research projects relating to the enrollment of new members and the active/inactive status of current members. The Retirement Intern will support the research and collection of documentation in support of the retirement calculations performed by the ERRS retirement counselors. Additional duties will also be assigned as needed. The retirement system anticipates hiring one intern under this announcement, although it may hire more than one intern based on availability, scheduling, and funding.

    DURATION AND COMPENSATION The internship will begin on or about June 1, 2025. The end date for this internship will be flexible based on the intern’s academic year. Normal weekly hours are anticipated to be approximately 15 hours per week on a mutually agreeable schedule. Hours can be increased or otherwise adjusted depending upon on the intern’s availability. The hourly rate will be $15.00 per hour.

    LEARNING OUTCOME AND BENEFITS - Understanding of communications with the public and internal constituencies. - Knowledge of government regulations and procedures at the state and local level. - Ability to research issues and find, obtain, and organize relevant documents. - Preparation of written reports, distilling issues and recommending resolutions. - Exposure to public sector employees and government operations. - Knowledge of Massachusetts laws, regulations, and politics.

    EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS - Experience and/or interest in state and local government. - Excellent written and oral communication skills. - Professional appearance and excellent interpersonal skills. - Computer skills, particularly experience with Microsoft Office 365.
